The purchase of two C-27J Spartan tactical transport aircraft by the Slovak armed forces is a mistake, director of the Centre for European and North Atlantic Affairs (CENAA) Róbert Ondrejcsák stated on Thursday. Ondrejcsák was referring to a Government decision made on Wednesday.
The security analyst said that although he's in favour of modernising the Slovak armed forces further, there are more pressing matters that should have been dealt with. Instead of the Spartan aircraft the Government would have done better by buying new helicopters for the military. Furthermore, Ondrejcsák observed that he would expect a broad discussion among experts and the wider public prior to such a strategic decision. The Defence Ministry did not feel the need to initiate an open debate on the matter, he stated.
