The government approved a draft law proposed by an MP of the governing SMER party forbidding the selling of unhealthy food products in school canteens. The draft aims to help fight the ever-growing problem of overweight students.
Various kinds of sweet sodas, sweetened mineral waters, fast food, food that is too salty, sweetened products, ice-cream and other foods defined as unhealthy will not be on the shelves of school canteens anymore. Opposition party Freedom and Solidarity deputy Jana Kiššova claims that at schools kids are served meals produced from pre-cooked powders, and although they don’t fall into the categories described, they are still considered unhealthy. Rather than a ban on some food-products she proposes that nutrition at schools in general be dealt with. A number of experts from the field of nutrition shared their dissatisfaction with the law and opposition deputies as well as deputies of the governing party SMER had comments to this draft. However, it is expected that the draft will be passed in Parliament and then be sent over to the President for a final signing off.
