Two tourists die in High Tatra Mountains, one of them a famous mountaineer

Two Slovak trekkers have died in two separate incidents in the High Tatra Mountains after falling on icy surfaces, the Mountain Rescue Service (HZS) reported on Sunday. The fatal accidents occurred at the time of a popular porters’ competition called the Sherpa Rallye in the locality of Chata pod Rysmi.

The two tourists killed - a 36-year-old woman and a 78-year-old man - weren't among the registered competitors in the event, however. The 78-year-old man concerned suffered serious head injuries to which he succumbed despite the efforts of the paramedics. According to the website cas.sk, the killed man was prominent mountaineer and traveller František Kele, who in 1984 led the first Czechoslovak expedition to Mount Everest in the Himalayas.
