Pellegrini: Legacy of Matica slovenska relevant even today

The message of national heritage institution Matica slovenska that the path to economic progress leads only via the development of culture, education and morality remains clearly relevant even today, said President Peter Pellegrini on the occasion of Matica slovenska Day, commemorating the establishment and renewal of the institution, on Sunday.

The president noted that the institution played a major role in the successful completion of national emancipation efforts of the Slovak nation in the past. He also stressed that values that were important at the birth of Matica slovenska are the same values that are urgently called for even today - the cohesion of the nation and the ability to reconcile and to stand up for a common cause.

Matica slovenska was established on August 4, 1863 and since 1993, Slovakia celebrates this day as the day of Matica slovenská.
