President condemns hateful ideologies on Roma Holocaust Memorial Day

On Roma Holocaust Memorial Day, Slovak President Peter Pellegrini condemned hateful ideologies and urged remembrance of the victims. He emphasized that persecution based on race, ethnicity, religion, or other factors always leads to human suffering. Pellegrini expressed horror at the historical genocide and dismay over the persistence of similar ideologies today. The day commemorates the August 1944 murder of nearly 3,000 Roma at Auschwitz-Birkenau, with estimates of up to half a million Roma and Sinti killed during WWII, including around 1,000 in Slovakia. On the occasion of Roma Holocaust Memorial Day, a commemorative event associated with a concert by Barbora Botošová and her musical ensemble will take place on Friday (2 August) at 5 p.m. in the premises of the Holocaust Museum in Sereď.
