Slovak and Czech scientists send bacteria to space

On Sunday morning at 7:30 CET, Slovak and Czech researchers launched at the airport in eastern Slovak Spišská Nova Ves a stratospheric probe, which tested the effectiveness of unique biosensors developed by experts from the Mendel University in Brno, Czech Republic.

The probe reached a height of nearly 35 km, where the biosensors scanned the impact of space radiation on the DNA of bacteria that were present in the packaging of the probe. “The bacteria are able to survive in very extreme conditions. For this experiment, we have selected colonies of bacteria that are present on the human body or those that are normally encountered,” said the leader of the research team René Kizek of Mendel University.
