The fury of war must not be repeated, President Peter Pellegrini posted on a social network on the occasion of the anniversary of the beginning of the First World War on Sunday (July 28th).
"We must never let the fury of war repeat itself. All the more so when guns are rattling around the world and in Europe today, it makes sense to support peaceful diplomatic efforts that lead to calming down the situation and halting the killing on both sides," the President wrote.
The First World War broke out on July 28th, 1914, when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. The war lasted for more than four years, claiming the lives of 10 million soldiers. Millions more suffered permanent physical or psychological damage. The war also hit the territory of modern-day Slovakia, on which the front line stretched from the Carpathians to eastern Slovakia.
