The difference between the remuneration of women and men has increased slightly in 2024, caused mainly by the rate of university education among women, their ability to find a place on the labour market, maternity leave and child care, according to a report on the structural challenges of the current year published by Slovakia's central bank (NBS) earlier this week.
"Slovakia is among the European countries with the highest salary gaps between women and men, with Slovak women earning some 20 percent less than Slovak men per hour of work. Just for comparison, the average salaries of women and men in Italy and Belgium are practically the same," stated NBS.
The central bank stated that the gender salary gap in Slovakia has been high for several years, which may be partly related to longer maternity leave. NBS believes that this gap could be reduced if women returned to work earlier.
