Farm animal vet numbers in decline

The number of vets for farm animals is decreasing. There is a threat that this kind of animal will not be taken care of in the future. “Roughly 100 to 120 colleagues leave each year. The biggest reason is that there is an acute decrease in cattle and farm animals in general," explains veterinarian Július Balog. Most farm animal veterinarians are in their 50s and 60s and only a small number of young people wants to pursue the job of treating this type of animal. At The University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Košice, it is only 10 percent. Many young veterinarians go abroad. The fact that it is a very demanding job also discourages them from this profession.
