A total of 501 people committed suicide in Slovakia last year, which is 62 fewer cases than in 2022, the National Health Information Centre (NCZI) reported. The number of suicide attempts (678) also fell last year, 46 fewer than the year before.
More than 80 percent of suicides last year were committed by men, which is a long-term trend, according to the NCZI. Suicide under the influence of alcohol or another addictive substance was carried out by 189 people. The highest number of suicides last year were committed in March and May.
According to the data reported by psychiatrists, nearly three-quarters of people who have attempted suicide have had a psychiatric diagnosis. "The most frequent were reactions to severe stress and adjustment disorders (167 persons), followed by depressive episodes (57 persons), mental and behavioural disorders caused by alcohol use (52 persons) and other anxiety disorders (29 persons)," said the NCZI.
