Slovakia is currently considering providing technical assistance to the Iraqi military in the fight against Islamic State (IS), Defence Ministry spokesperson Martina Ballekova told TASR on Wednesday.
“Slovakia is analysing options of military-technical assistance to the Iraqi security forces, as it has been requested,” said Ballekova, adding that Slovakia won't send any troops to the conflict. Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák last month indicated that Slovakia may provide training to the Iraqi military and Kurds facing the Islamic State on Iraqi territory. “We have to halt this phenomenon, or we may have them knocking on our doors before we know it,” said Lajčák at the time. The US-led coalition, which emerged less than two months ago, has dropped almost 1,000 bombs on positions of the Islamic State.
