President Peter Pellegrini has signed the Lex Assassination, a legislative package drafted by the government in the wake of the assassination attempt. It is aimed at improving the security situation in Slovakia.
The package introduces restrictions of public gatherings near the homes of politicians and areas predominantly used for residential purposes and in a 50-metre radius of the Presidential Palace, the Government Office and courts. Top constitutional officials will have the right to live in an estate provided by the state and PM and parliamentary chairs serving over 10 years will be entitled to a lifetime salary.
The measures are also aimed at increased protection of Members of Parliament.
The opposition criticised the lifetime salary for Prime Minister Robert Fico and the restrictions on the right of assembly. A number of parties were considering taking the law to the Constitutional Court.
