Strengthening NATO's eastern flank is crucial for Slovakia

Slovak President Peter Pellegrini on Wednesday welcomed US President Joe Biden's decision to strengthen the defense of Ukraine's airspace. At the NATO summit in Washington, however, he drew attention to the related possible consequences for countries in NATO’s eastern flank. Pellegrini plans to speak at the NATO summit and the associated Public Forum about "what are the capacities of the defense industry of the United States and Europe, so that we are able to implement plans for the overall protection of the eastern flank with air defense."

He confirmed that the Slovak Republic will participate in the total NATO package for Ukraine worth 40 billion dollars. According to Pellegrini, Slovakia also "supports Ukraine's maximum integration efforts into the European Union and will provide all its know-how for reforms". "However, we insist on including text that talks about Ukraine’s future NATO membership. At the moment, it is possible to open this issue only when there is peace in Ukraine and there is no war," he said.
