Overall health of Slovaks only slightly improving

According to a report on developments in the 2014 to 2030 strategic framework of health care, the overall health of Slovaks is only slightly improving, and, in some regions, it is worsening. On Wednesday. the Ministry of Health pointed out that, according to the current development, Slovakia will probably not achieve the goals set in several areas. "Since the adoption of the first version of the strategic framework…, there have been no changes in the values of the indicators up to 2023. According to the development so far, it can be assumed that most of the indicators (a total of 30) will not reach the goals set," the ministry stated.

It noted that the COVID-19 pandemic also contributed significantly to the deterioration. "The life expectancy of men and women fell during the pandemic, and in 2021 it was the lowest in the last ten years," the ministry explained. Both the total and infant mortality rates remain high compared to other European countries. Slovakia also lags behind in public health indicators.

Indicators of institutional care mainly show stagnation or deterioration, especially in the management of hospitals. The number of nurses remained practically unchanged, although the number of doctors grew slightly. The use of digital healthcare is not increasing, and the indicators focused on science and research have not improved either.
