Michal Simecka, the leader of largest opposition party Progresivne Slovensko (PS), has called on Premier Robert Fico (Smer-SD) to stop insulting hundreds of thousands of voters who chose the principles of freedom, equality and a better future for Slovakia in the most recent general election.
"In his first public speech since the assassination attempt on him, Prime Minister Fico compared liberalism and progressivism to cancer. This is what the proverbial reconciliation looks like from his perspective," wrote Simecka on Facebook.
Premier Robert Fico misused Saints Cyril and Methodius Day to spread hatred and stir emotions, head of the opposition SaS party Branislav Groehling said at the weekend.
"He hit the bottom when he compared liberalism (i.e. freedom) to cancer. In effect, he declared war on democracy and the free competition of ideas and values," said Groehling adding that after four governments led by Smer-SD, tens of thousands of Slovaks are leaving to liberal countries in search of a better life.
The opposition Christian democrats (KDH) noted that Premier Robert Fico wants to build a bulwark against progressivism despite the fact that his party long formed part of a socialist-progressive coalition in the European Parliament that promoted this ideology.
Speaking on a private TV debate on Sunday, Labour Minister Erik Tomas said that his Hlas-SD party is ready to discuss the potential amending of the Constitution, but it prefers avoiding cultural-ethical and ideological issues that polarise society if it comes down to it. The Labour Minister noted that the coalition would also need votes from opposition MPs to amend the Constitution, however.
