An amateur mineral collector from south-central Slovakia has made a unique discovery. Ladislav Oravec found the largest gemstone in Slovakia so far - a sapphire. In the village where it was found, a monument will be erected to mark the discovery.
"It is the largest sapphire ever found in our country, but not only on our country, but also in the whole Carpathian Mountains. It is blue. It is very difficult to find sapphires in Hajnačka, Gemerské Jablonec," says Daniel Ozdín, a mineralogist from the Department of Natural Sciences of the Charles University in Bratislava.
