On Saturday, a commemorative event entitled Meeting of Generations was held in Kalište with President Peter Pellegrini in attendance. In his speech, he claimed that commemorating the suffering of locals should be a warning that life without peace and freedom is impossible. According to him, recent years have shown “the bitter reality that these values are no longer commonplace.” The village was burned down by SS troops in March 1945. He pointed out that Kalište is the only one of more than a hundred villages burned by German troops, that was not rebuilt after the war.
