Cloudbursts and persistent rains have to prompted Nitra mayor Marek Hattas to declare a state of emergency for the region. "Damage to both public and private property is extremely high. At the moment, I can confirm that we have not recorded any deaths, and I firmly believe that will remain true," the mayor stated.
According to Hattas, local roads, homes, and land are flooded with high water and mud. In the region, roads have collapsed, street lights and energy grids have failed, and sewage is spilling into streets, requiring local fire departments to pump water out of the affected areas. "Such high short-term precipitation totals naturally cause accompanying flooding phenomena of a smaller or larger scale in exposed places. Local storm activity will continue during the night," warned the Slovak hydrometeorological service.
