Rakusý, a village in the Tatra mountains, will soon be home to the only state school in Slovakia to teach in both Slovak and the Romani language. The Ministry of Education recently green-lit the project which is set to teach the 870 exclusively Romani students.
Many Romani children come from homes that do not speak Slovak, and this can be seen in their academic performance. "The child may know the information, but they do not understand what is required of them. If we don't know how to tell them in the Romani language, then the child is needlessly placed in special classes or labeled as incompetent," says Lucia Brutovská, the director of the primary school.
Preparations for the new project, which includes educating teachers in Romani, should take about a year.
