A legislative package, the so-called Lex Assassination Attempt drafted in the wake of the shooting of Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD), will be deliberated on by Parliament in a fast-track procedure, Parliament decided on Tuesday.
The bill is designed to usher in more stringent security measures and restrict public protests, for instance, banning any protests held within 50 metres from the residence of the Slovak President, the Slovak Government or a court or 100 metres from the Constitutional Court. The bill also bans protests in residential zones and in front of homes of individuals, if the protest is organised over the way the individual in question carries out his or her profession.
The President, the Parliament Chairperson and the Prime Minister will be assigned official state residences whereas Parliament Chairpersons and Prime Ministers who spent two full terms in office will receive a lifelong salary from the state.
