Gas supplies flowing to Slovakia from Russia via Ukraine have been running short since September, by some 10 percent. On Wednesday, the Slovak gas utility SPP recorded a 50-percent drop in gas supplies.
Prime Minister Robert Fico announced this adding that “what matters for the Slovak public, as well as the entire business sector, is that notwithstanding this situation, SPP guarantees continuous and undisrupted supplies of gas to all of its customers all the way to large industrial enterprises. Safe supplies are a massive priority for the Slovak Government as well as SPP itself”. PM Fico added that SPP has responded to the situation without delay and purchased gas on the so-called spot market, enough to cover current daily consumption as well as to fill reservoirs. Should such a sizeable cut in supplies persist in the days ahead, PM Fico will call for an extraordinary Government session.
