Finance Minister Kažimír: Slovenske Elektrarne might be unsellable

Selling the majority 66 percent stake in Slovenske Elektrarne, the largest producer of electricity in Slovakia, will not be so easy, claims Finance Minister Peter Kažimír. According to him there are several unresolved legal disputes at Slovenske Elektrarne that may hinder the whole sale.

The Supreme Audit Office is already preparing for an audit at the power utility company. The government recently spoke about increasing its influence in Slovenske Elektrarne and purchase the entire 66-percent stake or increase their holding. Enel, which in 2006 became the company’s main shareholder and currently owns a 66 percent of its shares, agreed in early July to sell its stake in Slovenske Elektrarne. In addition, the company agreed to sell assets in Romania. The price of these shares remains a question for now. It is only known that the Italians would like to get at least €4.4 billion from the sale of Slovenske Elektrarne and assets in Romania. Eight years ago Enel paid less than €840 million for the acquisition of the Slovak power utility.
