Opposition MPs consisting of the Slovakia party, Za Ludi and Christian Union have proposed a bill that would introduce a new crime of defaming the symbols of the Slovak Republic and European Union, which would be punishable by sentences of up to three years in prison.
The MPs noted that the flag of the European Union is among the Union's most important symbols. “Its protection is a sign of respect for European values and, at the same time, a commitment to the common project of European integration,” they said. According to the MPs, burning the flag, whether Slovak or European, is an insult and shows lack of respect for these values. It also fuels tensions and conflicts, disrupts public order, provokes unrest, “and last but not least, it denigrates democracy,” they added.
