Parliament resumes special session on changes in RTVS

Parliament on Wednesday resumed a special session on a bill dealing with changes in public-service broadcaster Radio and Television Slovakia (RTVS).

The institution should be renamed Slovak Television and Radio (STVR). The session was postponed a week ago following the assassination attempt on Premier Robert Fico (Smer-SD).

The bill on STVR was approved by the government in late April. The motion does not formally split RTVS, but it does change the rules guiding the creation of the public-broadcaster's bodies and terminates the tenure of incumbent director Lubos Machaj and the RTVS Board members.

The parliamentary debate on the bill has been limited to a maximum of 24 hours. The total time will be divided among individual parliamentary caucuses.
