Air-defence system contract to be completed by summer

I'd like to conclude a contract for air-defence systems by the summer, Defence Minister Robert Kalinak (Smer-SD) said at a discussion on the 20th anniversary of Slovakia's accession to NATO on Tuesday, adding that it should involve the purchase of at least six batteries that could effectively cover not only strategic but also civilian targets.

The head of the ministry also confirmed his interest in expanding the order for F-16 jet fighters, "Because new tasks are simply bringing that," he stated, adding that modern tanks, which are the missing element of the heavy mechanised brigade, are also a topic of discussion.

In the case of wheeled and tracked armoured vehicles procured by his predecessors, he speaks of trying to balance contractual obligations. "It has its flaws, but I think in intensive discussions with both manufacturers we'll find that balanced relationship that is necessary to make such contracts able to work in the long term," he noted.
