The Slovak Environmental Inspectorate (SIZP) has detected further illegal transnational shipments of waste from Italy to Slovakia, stating that more than 102 tonnes of waste made up of plastics, textiles, metal, wool, paper, cardboard, wood and other unspecified materials were shipped to a warehouse in Liptovsky Mikulas in 2021.
Upon finding the shipment in the warehouse, the inspectorate and the Environment Ministry in cooperation with the Italian authorities and Italian Embassy in Slovakia managed to ensure that the waste would be treated at the expense of the Italian waste producer.
The inspectorate explained that the waste is now being treated in an environmentally sound manner in Slovakia, in accordance with applicable regulations. According to SIZP, the Italian company will bear all the costs associated with loading, transporting and processing the waste at an authorised treatment facility.
