Robert Fico left for an official visit to Azerbaijan on Monday. On Tuesday (May 7), he is meeting the country's president Ilham Aliyev in Baku, with whom he is discussing deepening bilateral relations with an emphasis on economic cooperation. The two authorities will sign a declaration on the strategic partnership between the Slovak Republic and Azerbaijan.
The Minister of Economy Denisa Sakova is also present at the meetings.
She pointed out that Azerbaijan plays a relatively large role in the area of gas diversification for Central and Eastern Europe. "We firmly believe that we will be able to establish contact and cooperation in the field of gas supplies to Slovakia and to Eastern and Central Europe. This interest is also expressed by neighbouring countries such as Austria, Czech Republic, and Hungary.”
As she added, the Slovak delegation will make the effort to ensure that the gas its neighbours could import from Azerbaijan to Slovakia and thus diversify supplies so to cut themselves off from Russian gas.
