The governing party SMER-SD refused to call on Russia to stop the aggression against Ukraine. The text according to which ”the Slovak Parliament specifically appeals to Russia to not interfere in the internal affairs of Ukraine, to not provide military assistance to separatist rebels, to respect the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Ukraine, and to use all its influence to achieve de-escalation of the conflict”, did not make it into the parliamentary resolution.
MPs for SMER-SD rejected this text. Originally, this statement was included in the resolution drafted by the Foreign Affairs Ministry, but the Parliamentary Committees discussing the draft resolution decided to leave it out. Adding the text to call on Russia to stop interfering in Ukraine was proposed by opposition MPs Eugen Jurzyca (SDKU-DS) and František Sebej (MOST-HID). The eventually approved resolution on the situation in Ukraine that the Slovak Parliament passed on Wednesday states that “the Slovak Parliament supports all efforts of the international community, which aims to achieve a peaceful solution to the conflict in the southeast of Ukraine”. The Slovak parliament further expresses its belief that “on the way to achieving a lasting peaceful solution to the conflict, a mutually acceptable compromise must be sought between the government of Ukraine and representatives of the rebels in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.”
