The 2023/24 winter was the warmest since 1931, with meteorologists characterising it as exceptionally abnormally warm.
"The absolute daily air temperature maximum in this winter was recorded on February 27 and it was 19.2 degrees Celsius in Orechova, whereas the absolute minimum on January 9 was minus 24.1 degrees Celsius in Cerveny Klastor. The lowest daily average air temperature in this winter was minus 18.4 degrees Celsius on January 16 on Lomnicky Stit, whereas the highest was 14.5 degrees Celsius in Muzla on February 10," stated the Slovak Hydrometeorological Office (SHMU).
According to SHMU, there were noticeably fewer freezing days this winter, below normal. "On average, 18.4 frost days were lacking, most of them in Modra-Piesok (-31.6)," stated the SHMU.
In comparison to 1991-2020 period, there was a subnormal number of freezing days in the 2023/24 winter in the whole of western Slovakia, most of the Banska Bystrica region and in southern districts of the Kosice region.
