The Slovak Defence Ministry managed to sell a portion of its surplus military helicopters which were offered up for sale via electronic auction in August, Defence Ministry spokesperson Martina Balleková confirmed to TASR on Saturday. According to the electronic auction protocol, the sale concerned three Mi-24 military helicopters.
Aside from this, the ministry has also attempted to sell 15 scrapped Mi-2 transport helicopters. The Mi-24 is a large helicopter gunship and attack helicopter, produced by the Soviet Moscow Helicopter Plant, with the prototype flown for the first time in 1969. Designed for the elimination of tanks and ground targets, Mi-24s were scrapped by the Slovak Air Force in 2011. The Mi-2 is a Soviet multi-purpose, lightly armoured transport helicopter that was manufactured in Poland. When armed with 57 mm rockets and 23 mm cannon, it can also provide close air support.
