Food producers sound alarm

The Slovak food industry is under severe pressure, said the director of the Slovak Food Chamber. Agriculture minister Richard Takáč announced extra money for the agricultural sector, but the food producers wouldn’t get any of it, said director Jana Venhartova. There is continued competition from foreign companies. In the supermarkets, only 40 per cent of food products is of Slovak origin.

€1.7 billion flows into the Agriculture Ministry annually from the EU, she said. "With these funds, we are well beyond self-sufficiency in cereals and oil seeds, but we export agricultural raw materials abroad, and foreign food flows to our country from abroad.“
