There will be no NATO military bases in Slovakia. No one has even suggested such a request to Slovakia, said Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák at the Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee session on Thursday. Slovakia though offers a logistics warehouse as a contribution to NATO operations, Lajčák said.
“We have one such warehouse 20 kilometres from Poprad (Prešov region). The army can't find a way to use it and there's a risk that 20 people might lose their jobs. If the Alliance accepts this, then the jobs will be saved. That won't be any military base, however,” stressed Lajčák, adding that the offer is still on the table and no reply has yet been received from NATO. Prime Minister Robert Fico said recently that in the case pressure is exerted from abroad to establish a NATO base on Slovak territory; he would launch a referendum on the issue.
