Reactions to the Court’s decision

Prime Minister Robert Fico said he was happy the court approved the closure of the Special Prosecutor’s Office, which he called "a hotbed of evil and hatred, violation of human rights."
He said he was curious why the Court had decided before publication of the law. It could have made this decision to suspend its effectiveness at any time, he said.

MP Tibor Gašpar (Smer-SD) said on RTVS this morning he considers the decision of the Court to be political and very simplified. He said the Constitutional Court of the Slovak Republic has become "a political tool in the hands of the opposition".

Justice Minister Boris Susko wrote on Facebook:  "Never before in the history of Slovakia has it happened that the Constitutional Court has decided on a law that hadn't entered into force." He also called it a shame that the media had received a copy of the decision before he got one.

The opposition parties cheered the decision, as expected.

The decision of the Constitutional Court inspires hope that it will prove to be a strong institution in critical moments for democracy, said Mária Kolíková (SaS) and a former Justice Minister.

Milan Majersky (KDH) said the decision proves that Slovakia is still a country governed by the rule of law where there's a system of checks and counterbalances.

Michal Šimečka, leader of the opposition PS party, said the Court‘s decision should be published as soon as possible. "I want to strongly warn Robert Fico, Mr. Susko and everyone, first of all, not to start questioning the Court, not to start attacking the Court but to publish the resolution in the Collection of Laws as soon as possible."
