Four thousand farmers on 2,200 tractors and other agricultural machinery from all over the country were scheduled to descend on Bratislava on Thursday. They were planning to tour the city and end up in front of the Parliament Building. This is expected to be the largest protest of farmers in the history of Slovakia.
Earlier in the day, several hundred Czech and Slovak farmers blocked the border crossing at Holic.
Yesterday, Farmers blocked traffic in 37 places in Slovakia. Their complaints include the slow payment of subsidies, restrictions imposed by ‘green’ policies, and competition from Ukrainian produce. One of the organisers, Emil Macho, said they were doing this for the future: "We are doing this primarily for the citizens, for us, for our children, for the generation that will come after us,“ he said.
