Six years ago on this day, the journalist Jan Kuciak and his girlfriend Martina Kusnirova were murdered in their house. The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, commemorated the anniversary this morning in Brussels.
The president said the European Parliament promised "truth, justice and accountability" to the parents of the two murdered young people.
„This remains our commitment today - to protect journalists, defend media freedom and fight for democracy," she said.
According to the police, the most likely motive for the murder was Kuciak's investigative journalism work. Three people have been convicted so far: two received 25 years in jail, one 15 years.
In Slovakia, as well as in eight other countries, demonstrations will take place today under the name 'For a Just Slovakia.'
Journalists still threatened
Last year, there were 48 instances of threats to journalists, said Lukas Diko, editor of the Jan Kuciak Investigative Center.
Most threats were online or verbal; but also three physical attacks, three cases where journalists were barred from press conferences, bullying lawsuits and two death threats.
He was concerned that personal attacks against journalists were sometimes launched by politicians, who were then followed by other people on social networks or through direct messages or phone calls. (TASR)
