On Thursday, Deputy Foreign Minister Rastislav Chovanec received Nigel Baker, Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to Slovakia. They discussed Slovak-British relations with emphasis on their economic dimension and also the situation in Ukraine. An important issue for both sides is support for investment of small and medium-sized British companies in Slovakia in order to establish themselves in the European Union as well as an interest in helping Slovak companies to establish themselves on the British market.
As Chovanec reiterated, there are 160 thousand Slovaks living in the UK. “We can capitalise on their experience, contacts and connections to find new investment opportunities. Let us use this potential to promote the economic interests of the Slovak Republic," he urged.
Ambassador Nigel Baker also stressed that Slovakia has a good reputation among British companies. He also briefed the Deputy Minister on the UK's new perspective on development cooperation, which, as the Ambassador said, needs to adapt to new challenges.
As to the subject of assisting Ukraine in its post-conflict reconstruction, Chovanec drew attention to the benefits of the geographical location of the Slovak Republic. “Slovakia could also serve as a centre for the preparation of supporting documentation for investments in Ukraine,“ he said.
