Slovak Maroš Šefčovič is member of the European Commission. In an interview with the news agency TASR he explained the EU’s industrial policy in a world where trade disputes are on the rise.
The competitive battle between the world's largest economies, the United States and China, is not about new combustion engines, but about clean, emission-free technologies of the future.
The EU must focus on those areas where Europe is strong and where it must remain strong in order to maintain its membership among the world's three largest economies. According to him, this is also why the European Commission emphasizes the areas connected with the European Green Deal.
"We say that the enforcement of the Green Agreement is also the EU's industrial strategy for the future," he explained.
The recommendation to reduce carbon emissions by 2040, and proposals for sustainable carbon capture, storage and use, presented on Tuesday, are intended to help the EU achieve climate neutrality by 2050 and at the same time are also a challenge for the transformation of European industry.
"If we want to succeed in global competition, we must also be strong in these sectors. That is why we are also working with European industrialists on how to direct investments in these areas, how to eliminate bureaucracy and set up public procurement to reward those who behave ecologically , and not push them into using cheap Chinese alternatives," said Šefčovič.
