Spišská Nová Ves District Court judge Ján Slovinský was elected a member of the Judicial Council on Thursday in a secret ballot, where he garnered 80 votes out of 80 present MPs.
Only governing Smer-SD MPs took part in the vote. Slovinský, who ran as the only candidate, is set to replace Dušan Cimo, dismissed by the Parliament on Tuesday. Slovinský will be able to participate in the critical Judicial Council session slated for 16th September, when the election of the Supreme Court Chair as well as of the Judicial Council Chair is on the agenda. This turn of events doesn't sit well with the Opposition, which takes exception to the short 24-hour deadline for filing nominations, set by Parliamentary Chairman Pavol Paška, and the fact that Slovinský signed his candidacy before the opposition parties learned about the intent of Smer-SD to dismiss Cimo, without any clear reason, as they say.
