The Holocaust committed on all its victims in the name of mad ideals of fascism is an eternal shame for those who were involved and a warning for the future, Prime Minister Robert Fico said at a commemorative event marking Slovakia's Day of Commemoration of the Victims of the Holocaust and Racial Violence in Bratislava on Tuesday.
Fico in the speech stressed the need of preserving a historical memory and education about the Holocaust, “so that the future generations learn systematically, purposefully and truthfully about the inhumanity of those whose minds and hearts were darkened by the mad and sick vision of personal well-being at the expense of others' suffering.” Fico highlighted that the Education, Science, Research and Sport Ministry released additional textbook material on the so-called Jewish question in Slovakia 1938-45.
He also pointed to the activities of the Culture Ministry in reconstructing the Holocaust Museum at the site of the labour and concentration camp in Sereď (Trnava region). The prime minister noted that Slovakia on 29th August commemorated the 70th anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising (SNP), reminding that Jewish partisans also sacrificed their lives for Slovakia’s freedom.
