The Vice President of the European Commission responsible for the rule of law warned on Monday that Slovakia could face financial sanctions from the EU, just like Poland and Hungary. This could happen if judicial reforms turn out to threaten the functioning of the rule of law.
Commissioner Věra Jourová, who is from the Czech Republic, said she was referring to the government's intention to reduce the penalties for corruption and economic crime, and abolish the protection of police whistleblowers. In an interview with AFP, Jourová warned that after the abolition of the special prosecutor's office, there could be "some cases swept under the carpet".
The proposals for judicial reform were also criticized by the European Parliament, last week.
