New energy policy delayed by tensions in Ukraine

The Cabinet has still not dealt with the draft new long-term Energy Policy of the Slovak Republic, although the Economy Ministry has submitted the material to the Cabinet Office already in late May.

According to the Economy Ministry, responsible for the delay in approving the new energy policy is the political situation between Ukraine and Russia. ”The draft Energy Policy additionally considers some questions of security of deliveries of energy raw materials to Slovakia,” the department told the web portal vEnergetike.sk. According to the Economy Ministry the Cabinet should discuss its energy policy soon. The Energy Policy for example envisages the construction of a new nuclear power plant in Jaslovske Bohunice. It furthermore counts with the project of a hydropower station Sered on the Vah River and the construction of a pumped storage hydropower plant Ipel. The draft material no longer counts with subsidizing electricity generated from renewable energy sources after 2020 through higher purchase prices. ”Those types of renewable sources will be preferred that do not exhibit fluctuation of production and whose sale price will be the closest to the market price,” says the draft strategy. The Economy Ministry has also included in the draft the crude oil pipeline project connecting refineries in Bratislava and in Schwechat near Vienna in Austria. According to the draft energy policy, a strategic project is the reconstruction of the crude oil pipeline Adria.
