The Chairman of the Judicial Council narrowly avoided being dismissed by his colleagues. Nine of fifteen judges voted to dismiss him; ten were needed. His opponents accused him of disrespect for fellow judges. The Judicial Council is responsible for the selection, appointment and promotion of judges in the country, to protect the judiciary from political influence.
