Fitch lowers credit rating Slovakia

One of the three international financial ratings agencies has decided to downgrade Slovakia.

This means that bonds issued by the government are considered slightly riskier than before; and that the government will have to pay a slightly higher interest rate to persuade foreign investors.
The agency Fitch Ratings has downgraded Slovakia's sovereign credit rating from A to A-.

Fitch says the downgrade is the result of worsening public finances. The agency sees a significant increase in debt as negative.

Last week, the government announced it would spend up to 1.25 billion euro this winter to subsidize energy bills for consumers.
