Snow causes power outages

Heavy snowfall caused energy disruption in central Slovakia on Thursday. On Friday morning, there were more than 9,000 households without electricity. More than 300 substations remain out of service. The Banska Bystrica region has been hardest hit.

According to the operator, masts were damaged, as well as insulators and conductors of high voltage overhead lines.

"The situation in Zvolen is rare. A high-voltage mast broke in the city center near the castle,” said spokesman Miroslav Gejdos. Its repair will probably take longer because the line is located near the railway line, and crosses the river, and it’s a very high-voltage line, which requires extra caution.

Of course, for ski resorts bad news is good news. About 20 resorts will be open this weekend.
