President shocked by undue speed

The government’s plan to close the Special Prosecutors Office was criticized by politicians and legal professionals.

The President of the Slovak Republic Zuzana Čaputová said she was shocked.

"I have to say that the manner and speed, I mean the shortened legislative procedure, in which such significant changes are to be adopted, shocked me," she said. She said she would carefully study the proposals. "I have the option of vetoing laws, of course, consideration of submission to the Constitutional Court is also considered, but that depends on the assessment of the content," she said.

The opposition party Slovakia is collecting signatures to convene an extraordinary meeting of Parliament , to express no confidence in the government.

Another opposition party, SaS, says the government's plans will seriously disrupt the entire criminal justice system. It is a risk for the legal system in Slovakia, said Mária Kolíková, SaS ex-Minister of Justice and member of the National Council for SaS.
