Slovakia’s high school students scored below average in the annual PISA test, conducted by the OECD, the worldwide club of rich countries. The PISA assesses the ability of 15-year-olds on mathematics, reading and science.
Education Minister Tomas Drucker highlighted that 30 percent of students who do not have basic reading skills are almost illiterate. The decline in mathematics was even more dramatic, he said. Most worrying is that both in the short term and the long term, scores have dropped dramatically.
"No one else, no other state, or a world conspiracy is to blame for the problem, it is our problem, the Slovak Republic. It is our national tragedy and the reason is the long-term neglect of finances and education priorities," said Drucker.
