In the name of his Cabinet Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico reserves the right to reject proposals concerning EU sanctions against Russia that would damage Slovakia's national interests. This statement came after the European Union’s summit at the weekend.
“We don't agree with this sanctions war. Sanctions don't lead anywhere; our politics shouldn't be made up of them. Further sanctions shouldn't be adopted before it's clear that the current ones have accomplished what they were supposed to. It appears that they haven't changed Russia's attitude, quite the contrary. Further sanctions could only make the situation in Ukraine even worse,” said Fico. In addition to Bratislava, Governments in Budapest and Prague have questioned the strategy to punish Moscow. Prime Minister Robert Fico’s view is not shared by Slovak President Andrej Kiska who believes that the EU states have to be united to make the sanctions work. The Opposition criticized Prime Minister’s statements. “By casting doubt on the Russian aggression, Fico is destroying the EU's unity and efforts aimed at halting Russia's aggression,” said Ľudovít Kaník, an MP of the Slovak Christian and Democratic Union (SDKU-DS).
