Modernisation of the lock chambers was completed at the Gabčíkovo Waterworks. This will increase the safety and intensity of water transport. Currently, functional tests have been completed and trial operation is underway. The renewed left lock chamber was handed over for use by three members of the government, including Prime Minister Robert Fico. Jana Ježíková, who is in charge of the state enterprise Vodohospodárska výstavba, was also present. According to Fico, the completion of this modernisation will make the Danube an even more important transport artery. Around 15 thousand vessels pass through the locks annually. Approximately 500 thousand people on various boats, mainly tourists. Fico said that about six to seven million tonnes of goods are transported there. A substantial part of the project was financed from EU funds.
