Bratislava aims to make bicycles equal to cars

The Bratislava city hall wants to shift the status of bicycle transport in the capital to the level of car and public transport, said Mayor‘s advisor Michal Feik. The city authority views bicycle transport as one of the opportunities to boost tourism and improve the traffic situation on the streets.

Cycling had been side-tracked in Bratislava and had been debated only as a leisure activity in the past. This is the reason why cyclists haven't been included into official transport statistics so far. The civic association 'Cyclokoalicia' has already been collecting data on the number of cyclists in the city on a regular basis. Its members counted almost 2,000 cyclists in one day last year, with the most frequented spot being the area around the SNP Bridge. The Bratislava city authority plans to buy two automatic devices for a total of €10,000, which should count cyclists on the cycle route near the Austrian border and on the new route between the SNP Bridge and Old Bridge.
