70 years since Slovaks fought back

This Friday, Slovaks commemorate one of the most important events in modern Slovak history: the Slovak National Uprising. The most vivid example of its importance is that there are around 200 city streets and squares named after this event in Slovakia.

The Uprising, which took place in towards the end of 2nd World War, was an armed movement of the Slovak army, partisans, and civilians against the German occupants and the collaborative fascist government of Jozef Tiso. It broke out on 29th August 1944, exactly 70 years ago.

“The overall importance is indisputable, because Slovakia and its citizens stood up with weapons against the occupants. In our history, this was the biggest military ascent of Slovaks in their defense. Thanks to this, after the war Slovakia got on the side of the victorious nations, and even today, after 70 years, there waves a Slovak flag at the celebrations of the D day in Normandy”, says Miloslav Čaplovič, director of the Institute of Military History.
